How to Get a Verification Code When Your Phone Is Off or Broken
Your phone is off, broken or stolen, and the app wants a code. SMS goes only to the SIM. So the first step is getting that SIM, or its number, into a working device.
Quick options
| Option | How it helps |
|---|---|
| Put the SIM in another phone | Receives the SMS as before |
| Ask the operator for a replacement SIM | Moves the number to a new card |
| Use backup codes | Skips the phone entirely |
| Use a second device with the authenticator | Signs you in without SMS |
| Wi-Fi calling or messaging on another device | Receives text on some plans |
If the phone was stolen
- Block the SIM with your operator at once.
- Change email and banking passwords from a safe device.
- Use recovery methods, not SMS.
- Report to the service if you see unknown sign-ins.
Prepare in advance
- Backup codes saved offline.
- A second recovery email.
- Authenticator with cloud backup, if you trust it.
- A spare phone or old SIM for emergencies.
Be careful with shortcuts
Never give your number's codes to anyone who offers to help for money. Also be aware that a replaced SIM is exactly what a SIM swap abuses, so set a port-out PIN with your operator.
Backup plan template
- Backup codes in a safe place.
- A second phone number on file.
- A recovery email you control.
- A trusted device that stays signed in.
Do not wait for the loss
Set these up now. The worst time to build a recovery plan is after the phone is gone.
