OTP Not Coming on Indian Networks? Check DND, Filters and Inbox Settings

OTP Not Coming on Indian Networks? Check DND, Filters and Inbox Settings

If you use a Jio, Airtel, Vi or BSNL number and OTPs are missing, the cause is usually on the phone or in a setting you changed, not the app. Work through these checks from the quickest to the slowest.

Check 1: the phone

  1. Restart the phone.
  2. Check signal bars and airplane mode.
  3. Check that storage is not full, since a full inbox can stop new messages.
  4. Make sure the number you typed is correct.

Check 2: message app filters

  • Open the messages app and look in spam, blocked or promotions folders.
  • Turn off the option that blocks unknown senders.
  • Remove blocked sender entries that match the service.

Check 3: DND and preferences

Do-not-disturb preferences are designed for promotional messages, and transactional messages like OTPs are normally allowed. But a strict category setting can sometimes affect delivery. Check your operator's preference page or app and try the lowest-restriction setting for a test.

Check 4: the service

  • Wait for the resend timer and request once.
  • Try the call or email option.
  • Check for a service outage on the app's status page.

Check 5: the operator

If none of the above helps, contact your operator and ask if messages from the sender are blocked on your number. Ask them to confirm that incoming SMS is enabled.

When you only need a throwaway code

For a test or one-time sign-up, a virtual number bypasses your own SIM completely. Your bank and main accounts should still use your own number.

Preventing it next time

  • Keep the inbox clean.
  • Do not install apps that auto-block unknown senders.
  • Keep the SIM active.
  • Note your operator's helpline number.

When to switch methods

If the problem repeats, move important accounts to an authenticator app so that you do not depend on SMS delivery.

Questions people ask

Do OTP messages come under DND?

They are normally treated as transactional, but check your operator's settings.

Why do codes arrive late?

Network congestion and sender routes can delay them. Wait for the timer before resending.
