Phone Country Codes Explained: What +1, +44, +91, +92 and +86 Mean

Phone Country Codes Explained: What +1, +44, +91, +92 and +86 Mean

Every international number starts with a plus sign and a short code. That code tells the network which country to route the call or text to. Getting it wrong is one of the most common reasons a verification code never arrives.

How the system works

The plus sign means "replace this with your country's international dialling prefix", and the digits after it are the country code. After the country code comes the national number. The standard way to write this is called E.164: a plus sign, the country code and the number, with no spaces, dashes or brackets, and at most fifteen digits in total.

Some codes you will see often

CodeCountry or regionExample form
+1United States, Canada and several Caribbean nations+1 then 10 digits
+44United Kingdom+44 then the number without the leading 0
+91India+91 then 10 digits
+92Pakistan+92 then the number without the leading 0
+86China+86 then 11 digits
+971United Arab Emirates+971 then the number without the leading 0

The leading zero

In many countries you dial a zero before the area or mobile prefix when calling inside the country. In the international format, that zero is dropped. A Pakistani mobile number written as 03XX XXXXXXX locally becomes +92 3XX XXXXXXX. If a sign-up form already has the country selected, do not type the zero.

Common mistakes that break verification

  • Typing the country code twice, once in the selector and once in the number.
  • Keeping the leading zero after the country code.
  • Choosing the wrong country in the dropdown.
  • Copying a number with hidden spaces or symbols.

When you order a virtual number

When you order a number on OtpGet, the number is shown with its country code. Copy it exactly as shown and make sure the country in the sign-up form matches. If the form asks for the country separately, pick the same one. You can browse the available destinations on the countries page.

How to read a number you receive

A number such as +44 7xxx starts with the country code, then the national part. The first digits after the country code can show a mobile network or a city. Two countries can have similar numbers, so always read the country code first.

Mistakes people make when choosing a country

  • Choosing a country because the price is low, without checking that the service accepts it.
  • Assuming the country must match your own location.
  • Writing the number with a leading zero after the country code, which many apps reject.
  • Ignoring the format shown by the website.

Questions people ask

Why do some countries share +1?

They belong to a shared numbering plan, and the area code after +1 tells them apart.

Is there a limit on number length?

Yes. The E.164 standard allows up to fifteen digits including the country code.
