OTP Going to the Wrong SIM on a Dual-SIM Phone: Causes and Fixes
Dual-SIM phones are great until a bank sends a code to the number in slot two while your messaging app listens on slot one. The message was delivered. You are just looking in the wrong place.
How it happens
- Both SIMs receive messages, but the app shows only one inbox by default.
- Your default SMS SIM changed after an update.
- One SIM is on roaming and the other is not.
- One SIM has data-only mode.
What to check
- Open the SIM settings and find which SIM is set for SMS.
- Check whether the number registered with the service is on SIM 1 or SIM 2.
- Open the messages app and see if it filters by SIM.
- Test by sending a message from another phone to each number.
Tips to avoid confusion
- Label the SIMs with the operator name.
- Register banking and email on one number only.
- Keep the SIM with banking in the default slot for SMS.
eSIM adds one more case
If one line is an eSIM, make sure it is switched on and that SMS is allowed for it. Some travel eSIMs are data only and cannot receive text messages.
When you just need a code
If the service allows a different number, a virtual number can avoid the dual-SIM mix-up for a one-time sign-up.
Quick tests
- Send a text to each number from a friend's phone.
- Look at the SIM name beside each message.
- Switch the default SMS SIM and request a new code.
Prevention
Pick one SIM for all banking and email. Label it. Keep it in the primary slot.
