OTP Works on One Phone but Not Another: How to Find the Cause
The SIM and the number are the same, so the network is fine. The difference is in the phone. That makes this one of the easier OTP problems to solve.
Start with these questions
- Does the phone show signal?
- Is the SIM in the right slot and enabled for SMS?
- Is the messages app the default?
- Is a filter blocking unknown senders?
- Is the storage full?
- Does airplane mode or battery saver pause messages?
Phone-specific causes
| Cause | Fix |
|---|---|
| Wrong default SMS app | Set the messages app you use as the default |
| Blocked senders list | Remove the sender |
| Spam filter | Check the spam folder and disable aggressive filtering |
| Old software | Update the phone |
| Dual-SIM setting | Choose the right SIM for SMS |
Test it properly
- Send an ordinary text from another phone.
- Request a code from a service you trust.
- Insert the SIM in the other phone and compare.
If a restart does not help
Reset network settings, which keeps your data, and try again. Contact the operator if the SIM still fails in both phones.
Throwaway codes
For one-off sign-ups where your phone is the problem, a virtual number avoids the SIM entirely.
Gather evidence for support
- The phone model and software version.
- The SIM operator.
- The exact time of the request.
- A screenshot of the message app settings.
Reset only as a last step
A network reset removes saved Wi-Fi networks but keeps your files. Try it after the simple checks.
