Testing Sign-Up and Verification Flows With Virtual Numbers: A QA Guide
Verification bugs show up only in real conditions: slow messages, odd country formats, repeated requests. A test plan with real numbers catches them before customers do.
Core test cases
| Case | Expected result |
|---|---|
| Valid code on time | Account verified |
| Wrong code | Clear error and attempt counted |
| Expired code | Message tells you to request a new one |
| Resend within timer | Button disabled |
| Resend after timer | New code, old one invalid |
| Too many attempts | Block or cooldown |
| No code arrives | User can cancel or use another method |
Countries to include
Test your home country, one nearby country and at least one far away. Different formats and delays reveal problems with number parsing and message routes. Choose from the country list.
What to measure
- Time from request to arrival.
- Message text and sender.
- How the app handles spaces and pasted codes.
Keep tests clean
- Use test numbers only for tests.
- Record the order ID for each case.
- Cancel and refund orders that get no code.
- Never use customers' real numbers.
Automation
The OtpGet API lets you script the order and poll cycle, including the email endpoint. See the Laravel guide for a service class pattern.
Reporting a bug
- Record the steps.
- Record the country, service and time.
- Attach screenshots.
- Write the expected and actual result.
Regression checks
Repeat the core test cases after each release that touches sign-up, email or SMS code.
